Maintaining your production size bottom load furnace

Maintaining your production size bottom load furnace on a regular basis can eliminate or minimize future downtime, not to mention ensure operator safety.

Deltech recommends the following:

Monthly

  1. Inspect the interior of the furnace for cracking and/or pin failures.  Replace pins as needed.  Please contact Deltech if any large fissures develop.
  2. Inspect the kiln car and bottom mating refractory.  Corner and bottom patch kits can be used to eliminate damaged refractory where light can leak out of the furnace. When you see light leaking out, it’s because your furnace isn’t sealing properly and it is losing heat. This can affect your ability to attain the required process temperature and result in poor product outcomes.

Annually

  1. Replace the thermocouples. Thermocouples age over time and begin to indicate a temperature lower than the actual temperature inside the furnace.  This can result in furnace damage and product loss from overheating.
  2. Inspect the lifting mechanism.  This includes, but is not limited to, fraying of the aircraft cables, and any cracking on the bearings and eyebolts.  Lock out the system and contact Deltech for replacement if any damage is found.

10 Years

  1. Full refractory reline.
  2. Replacement of aircraft cables.

As Needed

  1. Heating Elements should be replaced when they fail or if uneven heating develops.  If element failure or aging is suspected, cool the furnace down prior to performing any testing.  Heating elements normally last between one and five years under standard operating conditions. Check out our video tutorials on heating element removal and installation.

Heating elements, thermocouples, and furnace reline components are always available from Deltech. Contact us for answers to your questions, pricing, and lead times.
