Golf to support student scholarships

Montana Tech sponsored their first annual Montana Tech National Resources Scholarship Golf Tournament in May of this year. Held at the Blackstone Country Club here in metro Denver, it attracted 132 players and earned $20,000 for the Natural Resources Scholarship Endowment.

Our own Engineering Manager, J.J. Stevenson, was one of the participants in this worthwhile event. He’s pictured second from the left with his foursome.

The scholarships are designed to recruit deserving high school students to Montana Tech. Montana Tech is a public institution, part of the state of Montana university system, located in Butte, well known for being the site of now defunct pit mining. This STEM school has an excellent reputation for academics and for some of the lowest tuition rates in the country.

The school now boasts a graduate program in Materials Science. In the words of the program’s director, Professor Jerry Downey,

Montana Tech recently established a graduate-level Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Program. The degree offerings include a Master of Science (M.S.) in Materials Science and Engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Materials Science. The Ph.D. program began accepting students in fall 2014, produced its first three graduates at the May 2018 commencement ceremony, and expects to enroll 20 students for the fall 2018 semester. The M.S. program was approved by the Montana University System’s Board of Regents in May 2018, and already has enrolled three students who will begin their studies this fall. We are encouraged by the interest and rapid growth of the MSE program and are proud of our role in training the next generation of materials specialists.

Expect to see more in this blog about our late founder’s alma mater and their new materials science program!
